Mardy Street, Grangetown

Sash Window Preservation

This handsome Victorian terrace was the only house left on the street to have retained its original sash windows. The home owners hoping to preserve these historic architectural features, even though they were not protected by any conservation area, approached LM Conservation in 2019/20.

After the initial assessment, preservation works were agree for all of the windows at the front of the property; two bay windows and one single sash window above the front door, as well as to the kitchen window at the rear of the property.

The sashes and most of the frames and external sills were in great shape, requiring little more than reconditioning; removing the old paint and putty, shoring-up the structural integrity of the sashes with new wedges and pegs, removing, cleaning and reinstalling the original glass with fresh linseed oil putty, and refitting the windows with new part and staff beading complete with draught-proofing.
