Victorian Veranda

This Victorian veranda was in need of extensive repairs, not only to the highly decorative balustrades, but also to the roof, which had sagged significantly resulting in sever water damage to both structural and aesthetic timber elements.

The nature of this project required multiple trades and specialist crafts people to work together. Lazron Matia was asked to provide the specialist joinery work as well to act as project manager.

The veranda had to be supported with scaffolding, provided by AML Scaffolders, and the affected timber removed. LM Conservation liaised with roofers R.V Elliott & Co for the works to the porch canopy.

The decorative balustrade and structural pillars were removed to the workshop to be assessed and repaired. Many of the decorative spindles were severely damaged and decayed, those that could not be repaired were faithfully replicated by Cardiff based wood turner Clio Anastasiou. New replicated timber bases were produced and fitted to the surviving portion of the pillars using specialist heavy duty stainless steel brackets. New foundation plinths were laid for the new bracket system which would also function to keep the pillars off the ground preventing the same kind of water damage happening again.
