Roath Park

Sash Window Preservation

A preservation and conservation project, this late Victorian/early Edwardian semi-detached property is in the conservation area of Roath Park.

The work was carried out on seven of the ground floor windows at the front of the property. The windows were removed and taken to the workshop for repairs, most significantly to the lower portions of the lower sashes, and for reconditioning which comprised of: clearing old paint/putty, reclaiming any historic glass (which is then cleaned and re-bedded and faced with fresh linseed oil putty) and shoring up with new wedges and pegs.

On site, the repairs to the frames consisted of the removal and replication of all seven sills and repairs to the lower portions of the frames, where previous inappropriate repairs had caused water to collect and the timber to decay. Once all the repairs were made the windows were re-installed with new sash cords, pulleys, part and staff beading, complete with draught proofing. Externally the window were sealed and finished with sand-burnt mastic.
