Cathedral Road, Pontcanna

Curved Sash Bay Window

This beautiful Victorian/Edwardian bay window, with two curved sash windows, is in the conservation area of Cathedral Road. The windows were in very poor condition due to a number of contributing factors; there had been several poor quality repairs in the past as well as substantial quantities of silicone, render and other fillers used to crudely fill gaps between the windows, frames and stonework. Internally, fixed secondary glazing had been unsympathetically installed, obscuring much of the character of the window and interior architectural detail, and crucially preventing the original sashes from opening, trapping condensation, increasing the moisture content and keeping the windows continuously damp.

Such was the extent of the resulting water damage that, once the windows had been safely removed to the workshop, a significant drying period was necessary before any repairs could be undertaken. On site, the original sills had decayed beyond repair and had to be replicated and replaced. Early signs of dry-rot were also discovered in the frame, which was removed and the surrounding surviving timber treated.

Particularly noteworthy was the successful preservation of the incredibly delicate curved historic glass that features in the two side windows of the bay.
