Cathedral Road, Pontcanna

Part 1: Decorative Sill Replica

This late Victorian/early Edwardian semi-detached family home is situated in the Cathedral Road conservation area, in Pontcanna, Cardiff.

Work on this top-floor window began with the external decorative sill. The top portion of the sill had been awkwardly replaced, leading water into the lower carved portion, where it caused significant damage and decay.

The previous repair and entire lower sill was removed and a replica made to replace it. Due to its size and design, the sill, which served both decorative and functional purposes, had to be hand carved in the workshop before being fitted into the original position using the surviving original fixings.

Underneath the thick layers of paint the casements were in fantastic condition, requiring minor repairs to patch small areas of damage and replace missing wedges and pegs.

The stained glass was carefully removed and restored by Ashdown Glazers.

The frames required more attention, with repairs carried out to the external mullions (vertical members between the casements) and the external sill. Discrete draught proofing was fitted into the frame to help improve the thermal performance of the window and overall comfort within.
